Essay 1

The thoughts through a picture

Pictures are worth a thousand words. I attended the opening of the 2013 ary gallery last week at
class and was able to view pictures taken by colleege students for a contest. Everyone of the
pictures in the gallery ment something differnt to each person who saw them. Each picture
someone who looks at it will be able to relate a part of their life to the photographer.  I chose the
three pictures that caught my eye as well as got my mind thinking about them and how I can relate
to the person who took that picture. The first one that stuck out to me was "Behind the Dark
There Was Light" taken by Hailey Morris, The next picture i liked was "McGurts Train" taken by
Trevor Runyon and the last was a taken by Susan Tassin called "Not Such A Big Man Now.

The first one I chose to write about was the picture named "Behind the dark there was
light", this picture was taken by Hailey Morris. To me this picture is full of everything and nothing
all in the same. I instantly think back to hurrican Katrina and how many people's life were forever
changed by that storm and how fast it came and went. I often drive down River Road and see all
of the docks out there that are still to this day mangled and torn apart but still they stand and it
shows the strengh of not only mother nature but of people, it also shows the weakness of mother
nature and man. This picture can be expressed in millions of ways just depending on who looks at
it, it brings saddness and hurt those who lost something in the days of katrina, but to someone else
it might bring happiness and strenght. We have the tendacy to take life forgrated and pictures like
this one make you stop and think about all of the things that happen.

"Mcgurts Train" is a picture of an amtrak train going over a very old bridge. To me this
picture goes to show how technology has advanced by a new age train still operating on a bridge
built for steam engines. I like how this photo shows the strenght of something made by man and
how it has been able to stand up to its expectations. To me a picture like this gets my mind going
and I start to think about other things that we have in our society that are able to do the job like
this bridge. It shows how different times were in the days when this bridge was built, things built
then were built to last and endure the hardships, they were simpily built to last. We as people have
got away from that mind set and now we are looking for what is the cheapest and quickest way to
do the job forgetting and leaving out the part that its build to last. I relate this to the way America
has started to fail us as a country, the reason we now have to pay four dollars a gallon for gas and
why everything has doubled and trippled in price since the times when this bridge was built. For me
this picture has both love and hate but as all pictures its worth a thousand words.

Not such a big man now is the last picture I chose to write about mainly because this picture has so
many emotions. The woman in the picture could be described a thousand ways both good and bad.
To me I see a woman who has been abused by a man and she has taken matters into her own
hands to fix the problem. I cant say I completly agree with this picture but can say i dont blame
her. This shows what the out come is when someone has been pushed over the edge and feels like
there is no where else to turn. Desperation is a very strong emotion and when people get
desperate they take extreme measures. To me this picture yet again shows strenght and weakness
as all of the other pictures did

  1. I enjoyed reading your essay. Your interpretation of the selected photos got your point across. My only critique would be to proof read, and have others proof read, as I found a few misspelled words. Good job!
